The suspension and steering mechanisms of the car are not only vital for safety. They also make the comfort level of the vehicle better. The suspension and steering systems are in fact closely related to each other. In some times, they may be inseparable.
Let us first discuss the importance of the steering gear. Basically, there are two fundamental kinds of steering gear. We have the standard mechanical steering and the other one is the rack and pinion steering. The standard mechanical steering type can be further categorized into non-power or power assisted. Rack and pinion on the other hand is almost always assisted by power. They are rarely not powered.
A standard mechanical steering system with a steering gear box or a power steering box makes use of a series of links and arms which make sure that the two wheels of the car move in the same direction simultaneously. This design has not been changed for quite some years now because it has become a standard. Its simple design is also very much convenient.
The whole thing basically works this way. The steering wheel of the vehicle is connected to the box through a steering column. The box is responsible for the rotation of the steering wheel at a ninety-degree angle. In a power steering mechanism, a high-pressure fluid is responsible for actually steering the whole vehicle. This should not be confused with a steering rack.
